On or off the water, rowing can be a sport for all.
Our Mission
East Anglia Youth Rowing empowers young people across the region by providing accessible, inclusive opportunities to engage in rowing. We partner with schools and communities to promote physical and mental wellbeing, teamwork, leadership and personal development. We break down barriers to participation in a traditionally exclusive sport and utilise its potential to build Cultural Capital and environmental awareness. Through our programmes, we aim to inspire a lifelong love of rowing while fostering resilience, confidence, and a sense of achievement among all participants.
Our Core Programmes
Our programmes have been designed to maximise motivation, engagement and opportunities for self-development. Introductory Inclusion Programme taster sessions and experiences provide novel and fun teamwork and physical challenges that can be enjoyed by all, and make students aware of a new sport and opportunities in their local area.
Our Challenge Programmes require a 6 week commitment and provide the opportunity to develop skills in greater depth, either on the water or on the indoor rowing machine. A Learn2Row course provides opportunities to develop greater competence, confidence and team identity, and to take part in local competition.
Developing these themes to their greatest potential, our Aspiration Programmes are high-intensity opportunities for young people to truly develop rowing competence, resilience, self-esteem and autonomy.
Water Rowing Schools
EAYR supports schools within easy reach of a river, lake or coast to establish or continue links with a Partner Rowing Club, allowing students to participate in water rowing activities during curriculum time.
Our water rowing schools also use rowing machines on the school site, and take part in EAYR indoor rowing challenges and competitions.
Indoor Rowing Schools
Our 'no river rowing clubs' allow schools further away from the river to take up rowing as an indoor sport. Rowing is integrated into the school PE curriculum, extra-curricular clubs, and students participate in EAYR indoor challenges and competitions.
Our indoor schools are also offered the opportunity to take part in water rowing taster sessions during the summer term, and summer camps based at our Partner Clubs.
Taster Days and Holiday Camps
We offer schools the opportunity to experience full and half-day taster sessions of rowing activity at our Partner Clubs and Venues. This might be anything from an afternoon in stable single boats, to a full day learning the skills of Olympic Beach Sprints on the Norfolk Broads.
We also offer schools extended holiday camps. At a typical summer camp rowers start with a healthy breakfast, then spend a morning working on rowing skills on ergs, at an indoor rowing tank, or on the water. During the lunch break exciting STEM related activities offer a change of pace - from testing water quality to DNA sequencing strawberries or handling Antarctic ice cores - supported by our EAYR sponsors and members of the wider rowing community. Summer camp days end with a water rowing session, and a chance to put new-found skills to the test in a mini-regatta.
