At East Anglia Youth Rowing, we’re not just about rowing—we’re about fostering a connection between young people and the natural environment that surrounds them. This year, we’re thrilled to have partnered with FreshWater Watch, a global citizen science program run by Earthwatch. Through this initiative, our students have been exploring the health of local waterways, learning about the importance of freshwater ecosystems, and contributing meaningful data to a global database.
One of the highlights of this collaboration has been the involvement of students from North Cambridge Academy, who have embraced this opportunity to combine science and rowing in a truly hands-on way. By collecting water samples during their sessions on the river, these students have helped monitor water quality and gained firsthand experience of how their local waterways contribute to biodiversity and environmental health.
We’re also proud to share that their incredible work has been featured in recent campaign videos by Earthwatch! These videos highlight their passion, dedication, and the unique role young people play in tackling environmental challenges.

Why This Matters
The FreshWater Watch initiative is an incredible example of how young people can become agents of change in their communities. Through this project, our students have developed a deeper appreciation for their environment, learned essential scientific skills, and gained the confidence to make a difference.
We believe that this is just the beginning. By integrating rowing with environmental stewardship, EAYR continues to inspire young people to connect with their communities, protect their environment, and explore their potential in new and exciting ways.
